5 Steps to Making a More Nourishing Smoothie

Remember when smoothie bowls were all the rage? The vibrant colours, the strategically placed toppings, the beautiful bowl…the aesthetic alone makes them a worthy addition to your weekly menu.
I kid, I kid.
But seriously, smoothies can be a great option to include in your diet.
Most Canadians don’t consume enough fruits and vegetables, so blending them into a refreshing drink can be a sneaky way to get in more fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
They are also a convenient breakfast or snack option as you can drink them on-the-go!
Here are 5 steps to make your next smoothie a little more nourishing:
1. Choose a Nourishing Liquid

Dairy milk provides protein, calcium, and vitamin D, whereas a nut milk beverage (like almond or cashew) serves as a source of unsaturated fat; these options will make your smoothie more creamy. Alternatively, you could just use ice and water for a more slushie-like texture if that’s your jam.
2. Add Fruit for Sweetness

Adding fresh or frozen fruits, like strawberries, bananas, and pineapples, are a no-brainer when it comes to smoothies! They bring a refreshing sweetness while also offering up valuable nutrients and antioxidants.
3. Add Veggies for Micronutrients and Fibre

The problem that most people run into with smoothies is overloading it with fruit, thus increasing the sugar content substantially. Adding some veggies, like spinach, cucumber, or cauliflower, can really rectify that without compromising the flavour.
You get the benefit of added fibre and nourishing vitamins and minerals (without as much sugar) and without ruining the flavour of your drink.
4. Add a Healthy Fat

Including healthy fats in your smoothie can really make you feel more satiated and also help your body absorb some nutrients more effectively. Things like frozen avocado, nut butter, cacao nibs, flax seeds, chia seeds, or nuts are all delicious options!
5. Add a Protein

If the smoothie will serve as one of your meals, I highly recommend adding a source of protein as it will really up the satisfaction factor. Some easy options include Greek or soy yogurt or protein powder.
Add these 5 elements to a high-speed blender, blend until nice and smooth, and ENJOY!
Stay nourished my friends,
